Farming resources is something that gamers will do constantly, and Fallout 76 is a game that requires players to do a lot of grinding. From repairing weapons and armor pieces to crafting items and building bases, players will need to have a steady flow of resources in order to keep up with their crafting needs.
While it's not one of the rarest materials in the game, getting oil in large quantities can be a bit of a challenge. However, there are some things that players can do and places they can visit to get a decent amount of oil. This guide will go over the best ways to get oil in Fallout 76.
Junk That Contains Oil
There are plenty of junk items that contain oil. The list is quite extensive, so it's much easier to tag items for search than it is to memorize all the items that contain oil.
Best Places To Farm Oil
Oil can be found all over the map. However, some places are more lucrative than others.
Blackwater Mine (Plenty Of Canisters, Blowtorches, Paint, And More)
A Bathtub Southwest Of Sutton Station (Lots Of Soap)
Silva Homestead (All Sorts Of Junk Items That Contain Oil)
Gilman Lumber Mill (A Handful Of Canisters And Lanterns)
Clarksberg Hardware Store (Paint, Lighters, Canisters)
Clay's Bunker (Lanterns And A Couple Of Other Oil Containers)
Abbie's Bunker (Industrial Size Shortening, Gas Canisters, Paint Cans, Oil Cans)
The Cutting Fluid Recipe
One of the easiest ways to get lots of oil is by crafting and scrapping Cutting Fluid. The recipe to craft Cutting Fluid used to be incredibly difficult to obtain. While it is still rare, it's not as valuable as it used to be. When Wastelanders was released, there was a small chance of being awarded this plan by following the quest "Hunter For Hire." While it's still possible to get the plan this way, it's far easier to grind Mutated Events. There's a small chance of being awarded the Cutting Fluid Recipe each time you open up a Mutated Package. The reason why this recipe is so valuable is that it turns relatively basic materials into oil.
CAMP Items That Produce Oil
There are lots of CAMP resource items that players can build in their bases. Some produce food, others produce drinks or chems, and some produce oil. Two main CAMP resources produce oil: The Nodding Donkey and The Motorized Butter Churn. The Nodding Donkey is an Atomic shop item that can be purchased for 500 Atoms when available. The Motorized Butter Churn is a rare reward that is only obtainable during Fasnacht.
Buying Oil From Traders And Other Players
For those with FO76 Caps to burn, you can purchase oil from both players and NPC Vendors. While there's no guarantee that any particular player or vendor will sell oil, it's always worth a look, just in case. If you decide to purchase oil from NPC Vendors, then the best place to go is the Whitespring Mall. There are lots of vendors inside the mall. By the way, if you lack caps, you can buy cheap Fallout 76 Bottle Caps from U4GM!
Using Oil Extractors
One way to farm oil passively is to use oil extractors. There are a few locations dotted around the map where you can place your CAMP and build an oil extractor. For the most part, it's not really worth building an entire CAMP around an oil extractor since they don't generate a particularly large amount of oil. However, for those who want to build an oil deposit, one of the best locations to build is located just west of Vault 51. There are very few enemies in this area, making it an ideal place to call home.
