Types of Antidepressants Available
There are several classes of Antidepressants available by prescription that work by increasing the levels of serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine between nerve cells in the brain. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) were the first widely used modern antidepressants and include drugs like fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and citalopram (Celexa). Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) that influence two neurotransmitters simultaneously include drugs like duloxetine (Cymbalta) and venlafaxine (Effexor). Other classes include Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs), Tetracyclic Antidepressants and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
